ENGLISH:
We are the Palestinian Youth Club (PYC) for football, basketball, volleyball and ping-pong, living and based in the Shatila Palestinian Refugee Camp in Beirut, Lebanon.
The PYC has been officially established in 2010, but has been in the fields since 2005, bringing the younger generation together and keeping the community healthy in the tough surrounding of the refugee camp. We hold over 80 members, consisting of boys and girls of different age groups, however, without access to any communal space, no access to regular sports fields. Nonetheless, we remain very active and come together to make the best of our situation.
Our priority has always been to establish a strong and connected group, that was very active and willing to become a strong team. Two years in a row we had the chance to visit sport centres in Italy. There we have noticed the utter importance of having a sports’ centre and a community house, hence, it has become our new priority to keep the youth involved and provide them with tools to grow themselves. Furthermore, we want to use the sports centre in a variety of ways to cater for the needs of the entire community of Shatila next to sports.
The planned activities in this centre vary from tutor sessions/homework-support for children after school, host academic and cultural events, workshops for women, sporting clinic (with a specialized doctor) and different types of indoor sports such as martial arts/self-defence and ping-pong. The aim of all the activities is to keep the camp’s population healthy and fit and to find a safe place where they can develop new types of skills. Moreover, we are planning to host volunteers from different countries to contribute to the centre and its activties.

Project FAQ
Why is a sports centre important?
The Shatila Refugee Camp is based in Beirut's suburbs where the quality of life is very low. Not a lot of opportunities are offered to the Palestinan population who has a hard time accessing pubblic and private opportunities in Lebanon. It is important to offer an alternative space for young people who look to keep up a healthy life. A part of the indoor sports classes, the clinic and workshops we want to create a communal space in which the people of Shatila can come together talk, discuss, have fun and enjoy each other’s company and create a positive atmosphere in which we can create a better situation for all.
Where will the centre be located and how is it devided?
The located sports centre is in the middle of the Shatila Palestinian Refugee Camp, on top of an already existing building, on the 4th floor. The total surface is just about 90 m2 and will consists of a general area for the activities, and two rooms. Furthermore, there is an ability to expand and construct another floor on top.
What do you want to pay with the collected money?
PURCHASE OF EQUIPMENT
We will purchase materials for the activties, a floor-mattress for sports activities, fitness equipment, which will only be used for females to work out and different sport supplies.
On top of that, we need whiteboards for classes, lectures and workshops and a projector with screen for presentations. Then we need 2 laptops and a printer/copy machine for administrative purposes and basic office supplies. Finally, we also need furniture to decorate the centre.
